City Year and Richland One Announce Diplomas Now Dropout Prevention Program
Officials from the City of Columbia, Richland School District One and City Year have announced a grant funded program called, Diplomas Now. The program focuses on drop out prevention and will be implemented in high schools in Richland School District One. This initiative is only in 9 other United States communities. The Diplomas Now program was awarded $30 million from the US Dept. of Education through the i3 (Investing in Innovation) Fund. C.A. Johnson Preperatory Academy has been selected as the model site for this new program.

City Offices to Close in Observance of Labor Day
All City of Columbia offices will be closed on Monday, September 6, 2010 in observance of Labor Day. Garbage and recyclable collection will remain on the regular schedule.
City of Columbia Announces Southern Fried Fuel Environmental Initiative
The City of Columbia held a press conference recently to announce a new environmental initiative, Southern Fried Fuel: From Frying Oil to Trash Truck Fuel. The press conference served as the official kickoff of the City’s new used cooking oil recycling program. Citizens are encouraged to drop off their used cooking oil at the City’s Public Works Department. City of Columbia Green Business member, Midlands Biofuels, will then collect the cooking oil weekly and convert it into biofuel, which will be used to power one of the City’s garbage trucks.
City of Columbia and Columbia Empowerment Zone Announce Restaurant Opening in North Columbia
A press conference was held on August 26th at the North Main Plaza (3800 North Main Street). During the press conference Chef Frank Houston and Chef Millie Houston, along with Columbia City Council members, Columbia Empowerment Zone, Inc. Board members, and community leaders announced the opening of a new restaurant, Houston’s Low Country Grill. Houston's will officially open for business on Monday, September 13, 2010.
One Columbia Transition Team's Final Report
Mayor Steve Benjamin invited nearly 200 Columbia region residents, each experts in their respective field, to provide suggestions to help Columbia achieve its considerable potential during the next four years. Committees were formed in eight categories that impact the growth and quality of life in Columbia. The committees' work was facilitated by the members of the Mayor's transition team.
