Public Input Meetings for the Midlands Tomorrow





River Summit New Time and Date
Mayor Bob Coble of Columbia is convening a River Summit. DHEC, CMCOG and the River Alliance will provide updates on planning, regulatory and environmental issues affecting the Lower Saluda, Broad and Congaree Rivers.

The purpose of the summit is to bring together representatives from local and state governments, environmental groups, concerned citizens and others to discuss the recent pollution issues with the Saluda and Congaree Rivers and to try to come up with potential solutions.

Mayor’s Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Breakfast Update
Mayor Bob's Annual Breast Cancer Breakfast has been renamed the Isabel Law Breast Cancer Breakfast; in memory of the late Ms. Isabel Law. Isabel was a dedicated member of Mayor Bob's Committee Against Breast Cancer. She also suffered from the disease and was eulogized at her funeral which was held on Friday, September 19, 2008. Isabel will truly be missed but her memory will live on as the fight against cancer continues.
CPAC Green is Good for Business Conference
All organizations, businesses and individuals are invited and encouraged to participate or conduct on-going demonstrations throughout the day.

Exhibitors: An exhibit registration entitles your company to a 8’ x 10’ booth, electrical hookups, and entry fee for two participants, which includes breaks and lunch. The exhibit floor will be open from 10:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Admission: A participant registration entitles you to a full day at the summit learning about the environmental challenges our area faces. In addition there will be an exhibit floor to allow participants to interact with vendors displaying their innovations and processes.
Help Plan the Future of Transportation in the Midlands.
Residents of the Greater Columbia region are invited to comment on the region's multi-modal long range transportation plan, called Midlands Tomorrow: 2035 Long Range Transportation Plan. This is a vision plan that looks 30 years into the future – to the year 2035 – to address transportation needs and make recommendations for improving various transportation modes, such as roads, bike and walking facilities, public transportation, and freight systems for the entire region.
Call for Nominations for the 2009 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Keeper Award
The Martin Luther King Memorial Foundation Committee is accepting nominations for the 2009 Dream Keeper's Award. Nominees must be 18 years or younger enrolled in school with a minimum 2.0 grade point average. Applications must include a written statement of 150 words or less along with documentation of a minimum of one year of community service.

Nominations must be returned to: The City of Columbia Department of Parks and Recreation, 1932 Calhoun Street, Columbia, SC 29203, Attention: Dream Keeper Award by 5 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2009.

Cash awards will be presented to three high school students:
1st Place: $1,000
2nd Place: $500
3rd Place: $250

One middle and elementary school student will receive $100 each.

Winners of the 2009 Dream Keepers Award will be announced at the annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration hosted by the City of Columbia, on Monday, January 19, 2009 at 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2300 Green Street. The community is invited to attend.
