1.     Why did I called for an Ambulance ( EMS) and a fire truck show up?  

·        Our firefighters are trained in first aid.  We are sometimes closer than EMS and can assist with emergency patient care until EMS arrives.

2.     I heard something about free smoke detectors the Fire Dept is giving away.  Who do I contact and how do I get one?

·        Contact Michael Thomas in Fire Prevention at 545-3700 or email him at cfdmthomas@columbiasc.net.  He need your name and address.  He will fill out an order and fire personnel will come out and install them for you.

3.     Where can I go to get a Fire Report

·        If you had an incident and need a copy of your fire report.  You should be able to go to any fire station and have them print off a report for you.  You will need to know date, time and place.  Also, you will need to provide proof of identification.

4.     How do I get the Fire Department to come to my community event?

·        Call Fire Prevention at 545-3700 and speak to Michael Thomas or email him at cfdmthomas@columbiasc.net and ask for the Fire Dept to come to your community event.

5.     How often should I change the battery on my Smoke Detector?

·        It depends on the type of smoke detector you have.  If you have ones that are operated by 9V battery, we suggest changing them with time change.  Once in the fall and once in the spring.  Or if the smoke detector starts chirping that is also a sign that the battery needs to be changed.  The smoke detectors that the fire dept installs has a 10 yr battery in it.

6.     How often should I check my smoke detector?

·        You should check your smoke detector at LEAST once a month.

7.     How do I become a Volunteer Firefighter?

·        Go to your closest fire station and ask them where the nearest volunteer station is located. Click here for more info.

8.     When can I go to the fire museum?

·        Individuals and groups are invited to visit anytime from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays.  Admission is free.   For more information or to schedule a guided tour, call (803) 733-8350

9.     What is EDITH?

·        EDITH stands for Exits Drills In The Home.  We encourage everyone to practice fire drills in the house.  Everyone should have a plan and know what to do in case of a fire.

10.             What should I do if I see a fire or an accident? 

·        Dial 911 is the easiest thing to do.  Try to have as much information as possible so that the fire trucks have no problem getting there.
