Mayor Bob Coble to Speak at Greater Columbia Community Relations Council 46th Annual Luncheon

Crime Prevention Unit

Crime Prevention through police/community involvement is a high priority of the Columbia Police Department. The department's Crime Prevention Office provides presentations on a number of topics as well as special programs for specific areas of prevention. Below is a listing of ongoing prevention programs.

SECURITY SURVEYS AND ASSESSMENTS - Security Surveys are provided at no cost to the business and residential communities of Columbia . The survey consists of an on-site examination of physical facilities and surrounding property. The surveys are performed by specially trained police officers. The purpose of the survey is to recognize, appraise and anticipate loss, and to provide recommendations to minimize criminal opportunity. After a residential survey has been completed, citizens qualify to have approved deadbolt locks they purchase installed by City of Columbia technicians.

NEIGHBORHOOD CRIME WATCH - This is a citywide program, which operates most effectively at the neighborhood level. You, the citizens, are the unpaid eyes and ears of the Columbia Police Department. The department will assist neighborhoods in developing and maintaining Crime Watch programs. The department maintains permanent lines of communications with all Crime Watch groups.

PERSONAL SAFETY PROGRAM - This is program designed to aid citizens in reducing the risk of becoming a crime victim. By learning how to protect yourself at home, on the streets and in your car, traveling to and from work, shopping centers and school. By learning special tips on what to do in case of a potential attack, you improve your chances of staying safe. A similar program has been designed for seniors and for the handicapped.

SHOPLIFTING & ARMED ROBBERY - Police officers teach business employees what to look for, what to do and how to handle various aspects of these situations.

CHILD & YOUNG ADULT PROGRAM - McGRUFF - McGruff, the crime fighting dog, is one technique used in teaching children about strangers who may pose a threat to their safety. The program covers a number of other topics of interest to help children recognize ways to avoid danger.

OFFICER FRIENDLY - A program is conducted from kindergarten through third grade designed to establish rapport among students, parents, teachers and the uniformed police officer by providing students opportunities to learn about law enforcement through visits by Officer Friendly. The program strives to foster more supportive attitudes toward law enforcement by informing students about the many services the police officer provides to the community.
