City Of Columbia and Richland School District One Celebrate Ninth Annual
“Together We Can Read” Initiative
The City of Columbia and Richland School District One held the ninth annual “Together We Can Read” reading day event this morning. City Council Members, Richland District One Board Members, authors and over 100 guest readers from all over the region read to third grade classrooms in Richland School District One.
Together We Can Read” is a reading day program that encourages children to read and brings community leaders into the classrooms. It also teaches children why reading is so important and allows them to interact with positive role models. Studies show that children who do not read proficiently by the end of the third grade are more likely to drop out of school.
Over the years “Together We Can Read” has impacted over 18,000 third grade students at 28 schools and approximately 900 guest readers have volunteered their time and effort to this initiative.
Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine, who spearheaded the Together We Can Read initiative, stated “ Together We Can Read embodies what City Council has envisioned for Columbia. It connects our Community through outreach & empowers our residents to go out into their communities to make a difference in a child’s life because we want to show our children that they have positive role models that they can look up to right here in their communities. We want them to know that there are endless possibilities.”
Each year a book is chosen that highlights Columbia or South Carolina to give children the opportunity to identify with their local culture. This year’s selected book, “#JustaChicken”, is written by Preston Moore & Langston Thorne, two USC Alumni & football players, who are also both natives of South Carolina.
“The book #Justachicken is a coming of age story. We witness Cocky on his hero's journey to discover the greatness that lies within all of us. On his quest to win a trophy, he gains something much more valuable. This is the story of YOU, the story of ME, the story of USC! Written by two former University of South Carolina Alumni, this book tells a story of what it means to be more than #Justachicken! Colorful illustrations bring each SEC mascot character to life while encouraging dialog teaches everyone to embrace who they are.”
