City Celebrates National Preservation Month in May

May is National Preservation Month! The National Trust for Historic Preservation created Preservation Week in 1971 to spotlight local preservation efforts in America. Preservation Month is observed by small towns and big cities across the United States. There are all kinds of ways to be involved ranging from architectural and historic tours and award ceremonies, to fundraising events, and educational programs right here in Columbia.

Do you know if you live in a historic district? There are 15 historic districts in Columbia with unique guidelines for each. There are also 160 individual buildings and sites that have historic designation.
The design review process for Columbia's districts is administered by the Design/Development Review Commission (D/DRC) and City staff. The historic landmarks and historic districts recommended by City Staff member Mabel Payne in the 1960s are still under the purview of the D/DRC.
Since 2013 the Mabel Payne Historic Preservation Award has been presented annually by the Planning Division to an individual or group that has played a vital role in preserving the City’s architectural heritage. The award is named for Mabel Payne, a City of Columbia employee who directed the preservation efforts of the capital city during the 1960s when the preservation movement first got underway. Payne regularly appeared before the City of Columbia’s Historical & Cultural Buildings Commission and provided research for important buildings. Perhaps her most notable achievement was leading the efforts to save the Robert Mills House from demolition.
