​Register Now for the 10th Annual Mayor's Walk Against Domestic Violence
Mayor Steve Benjamin, Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine, and the City of Columbia staff will host the 10th Anniversary of the Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence. According to the Violence Policy Center South Carolina is ranked fifth in the nation for women killed by men. The Mayor’s Walk Against Domestic Violence brings awareness to the community and allows everyone to take action against domestic violence. The Walk is free to the public and registration is available at eventbrite.com. For more information please contact Public and Media Relations at 803-545-3020.

Councilwoman Devine Selected for Copenhagen Study Tour
Councilwoman Tameika Isaac Devine was extended a special invitation to participate in a five day, annual study tour of Copenhagen, the Danish capital, a city that consistently ranks in the top five of the most livable cities in the world. The trip will be held in partnership by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and 880 Cities. Participants will enjoy visits and tours of the city’s parks, public spaces, pedestrian and bike infrastructure; a master class in making cities for people with Gehl Architects; and discussions with the city’s leaders and city agencies.
​2016 Columbia Choice Awards Call For Entries
The Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission and Columbia Green present the 15th Annual Columbia Choice Awards for Landscaping and Beautification. These prestigious awards recognize individuals, businesses, neighborhoods and organizations whose work has significantly enhanced the appearance and quality of life of Columbia’s environment. All entries must be received by the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission no later than October 3, 2016.
City Brings a Brand New Ballgame to Sustainability
The City of Columbia’s Office of Sustainability and the Community Development Department are bringing a brand new ballgame to Spirit Communications Park on Thursday, October 6, 2016. This joint conference will cover topics including sustainability, recycling, homeownership, landscaping and home maintenance. West Nile virus detected in Columbia-area mosquitoes
The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC), Richland County and the City of Columbia announced on Sept. 9 that a sample of mosquitoes trapped in the Shandon area has tested positive for West Nile virus. For more information about preventing mosquito bites and the spread of West Nile virus and other mosquito-borne illnesses, go to www.scdhec.gov/mosquitoes.
