Local First Responders Face Off in Epic ‘Battle for Blood’
The Columbia Police Department, Columbia Fire Department and Richland County Sheriff’s Department are facing off for a lifesaving cause. The agencies are challenging each other — and the community — to give blood at the fifth “Boots and Badges” blood drive on Friday, May 27 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The drive takes place at two locations: the Charles Drew Wellness Center, 2101 Walker Solomon Way, and Columbia Place Mall, 7201 Two Notch Road.
OBO to Hold New Workshop for Early Stage Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners
The Office of Business Opportunities will host a new in-depth workshop that will introduce early stage and small business owners to the basics of intellectual protection. The cost for the workshop is $15 and will be held on Thursday, June 9, 2016 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 1201 Main Street, Suite 250. During the workshop attendees will learn how to protect investments in innovation by leveraging intellectual property tools including patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, licensing, and related contracts.
​National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month
June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month. The Columbia and Lexington Animal Services will be holding a $10 pet adoption special fee from Wednesday, June 1 through Thursday, June 30, 2016. The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip, Feline Leukemia/Heartworm Test, initial vaccines and deworming.
City of Columbia Expands Hospitality District Recycling Program
The City of Columbia Solid Waste Division is pleased to announce the installation of 13 new recycling containers in Columbia’s hospitality districts. New blue containers will be installed along the sidewalks for public use in the City’s three hospitality districts. Residents and visitors will be able to recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans, newspaper and more while strolling the streets of Columbia. In effort to reduce litter, save landfill space and save natural resources, the City is working to increase access to recycling and increase the amount of recovered materials. The hospitality district recycling program was made possible by grant funding.

The City of Columbia is being honored with a 2016 Playful City USA designation for the third time. T he national recognition program honors cities and towns across the country for making their cities more playable.
City of Columbia Announces Summer Pool Hours
The City of Columbia swim season will begin on Saturday, May 28 for Maxcy Gregg Pool, Greenview Pool and spray pools/splash pads, and will remain open until Monday, Sept. 5 (Labor Day), the City’s Parks & Recreation Department announced. Both Maxcy Gregg Pool and Greenview Pool will open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on opening day and from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, May 29.
