City Offices to Close in Observance of Independence Day
City of Columbia offices will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2015 in observance of Independence Day. All garbage and recycle routes will remain on schedule.
City Takes Steps to Help Citizens Stay Cool During Heat Wave
In response to the record breaking temperatures, the City of Columbia will take steps to assist the community in keeping cool. The City of Columbia Fire Department along with Parks and Recreation will set up misting stations in multiple locations. Effective June 17, 2015, these misting stations will be in operation from 12:00 until 7:00 p.m., when the heat index reaches 90 degrees or higher.

City Manager Teresa Wilson Selected for Liberty Fellowship’s 12th Class
City Manager Teresa Wilson has been selected for Liberty Fellowship’s 12th Class. For the lifelong experience, Liberty Fellowship recruits diverse leaders and immerses them in four seminars over a two-year period. Challenge of Leadership, the first seminar, sets the stage for Fellows to consider not only how they lead, but why they lead.
Celebrate Independence Day with a New Pet
In honor of the Fourth of July, Columbia Animal Shelter is teaming up with Richland and Lexington Counties to offer pet adoptions for $17.76 on July 4-7. All adoption fees include spay/neuter, microchip, Feline Leukemia/Heartworm Test, initial vaccines and deworming.
Free Summer Movies Series at Riverfront Park
The City of Columbia’s Summer Movies Series will be held on Friday nights during June and July at Riverfront Park, 312 Laurel Street. There will be face painting for a nominal fee, games and more prior to the start of the film at 7 p.m. Attendees can bring blankets, lawn chairs and coolers. No glass containers and alcoholic beverages allowed.
City of Columbia Recognized as 2015 Playful City USA Community
The City of Columbia is being honored with a 2015 Playful City USA designation for the second time by KaBOOM!. In partnership with the Humana Foundation, KaBOOM! is honoring cities, towns and counties across the country for making their communities more playable. The City of Columbia is among 241 cities and towns across the United States that received the 2015 Playful City USA designation. These communities are leaders in playability – the extent to which a city makes it easy for kids to get balanced and active play

Riverfront Park to Partially Close for SCE&G Tree Trimming Activities
Due to tree trimming activities, starting Monday, June 29, the main entrance of Riverfront park will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to enter the park through the north entrance.
