City of Columbia Partners with Additional Hotels for Peace of Mind Program
May 18, 2020

On Friday, May 8th the City of Columbia launched the Peace of Mind program to provide safe and comfortable resting places to city safety officers, first responders, front line city staff members and local health workers, who may be at risk of exposure to the Coronavirus during the course of their duties. The city has partnered with several local hotels who have designated specified rooms for the first responders and health workers to use for rest and recuperation at the end of their shifts.

The hotels have offered the rooms at a discount to the City of Columbia, and are available to the first responders at no charge to them. These temporary resting places allow the city’s dedicated and courageous public safety workers and frontline staff members, along with health workers who are called on to treat people potentially infected with COVID-19 to recuperate and rest in safe havens away from their homes, thereby keeping their families safe and giving them peace of mind.

After receiving support from Columbia City Council, Mayor Steve Benjamin collaborated with the Columbia Police Foundation to raise funds for the Peace of Mind program from private and corporate donors. Mayor Benjamin contacted hotel owners within Columbia, and secured partnerships with several to receive greatly reduced rates on rooms they designate to temporarily house public safety responders and health workers.
